A bill to facilitate the implementation of section 703 of the Railroad Revitalization and Regulatory Reform Act of 1976, to provide for the conversion of a part of the National Visitor Center to railroad passenger service, and for other purposes.
Union Station Improvement Act - Amends the National Visitor Center Facilities Act to direct the Secretary of the Interior, upon request, to transfer the lease and purchase option of the facilities of Union Station, Washington, D. C. to the Secretary of Transportation.
Directs the Secretary of Transportation, after such assignment, to operate that portion of the premises not subject to the Department of the Interior for operation of the National Visitor Center as a rail passenger terminal and intercity bus terminal.
Directs the Secretary of Transportation to acquire any property interest not held by the United States which may be necessary for the completion of Union Station. Directs the Secretary to complete the parking facility at Union Station.
Authorizes the Secretary of Transportation to allow the Washington Terminal Company to cease further construction of the new railroad passenger station in the area beneath and adjacent to the parking facility. Authorizes the Company, at the request of the Secretary, to transfer all of its rights and obligations concerning Union Station to the Secretary.
Amends the Department of Transportation Act to require the Secretary of Transportation to submit to Congress biannual status reports on the planning, design, construction, and operation of the bus facility.
