Authorizes a Federal court, upon a recommendation of the attorney for the government, to place any individual charged with a criminal offense under a program of community supervision if the court finds that the individual may benefit by such placement and that such placement is not contrary to public interest.
Directs that charges be dismissed 12 months following release to a community program or earlier if the individual has completed the program and the government concurs. Permits termination of release and resumption of criminal proceedings if the individual is not fulfilling his obligations under the program or if public interest so requires.
Authorizes the Chief judge of each district to appoint an advisory committee for each program of community services and supervision within the district, Specifies the duties of such committees and of United States probation officers in carrying out such programs.
