A bill to amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to increase financial assistance to States and units of general local government for the implementation of programs to strengthen prosecution of career criminals, and for other purposes.
Career Criminal Prosecution Assistance Act - Amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to authorize the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration to make grants to States which have provided funding designated exclusively for the implementation or operation of career criminal prosecution programs.
Requires States seeking assistance to include in such programs specific components and controls, relating to prosecution, penalties, pre-trial release, plea bargaining, and the designation of a defendant as a career criminal.
Authorizes appropriations not to exceed $50,000,000 for fiscal year 1979 for the purpose of carrying out this Act.
