A bill to provide for an investigation of the character and past activities of potential Vice Presidential nominees by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Provides that whenever there is a vacancy in the office of Vice President the President may, in writing, request that the Attorney General investigate not more than ten individuals listed in such request by the President as potential Vice Presidential nominees.

States that a Presidential candidate may, in writing, request that the Attorney General investigate not more than ten individuals listed in such request by the Presidential candidate as potential Vice Presidential nominees.

Directs the Attorney General upon receiving a written request from the President or from a Presidential candidate under this Act to conduct an investigation through the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the individuals listed in such request.

Provides that an individual who is the subject of an investigation conducted under this Act shall be notified by the Attorney General when the investigation is completed and shall be given an opportunity to review the evidence and information obtained through such investigation.

States that upon the nomination of a candidate for the office of Vice President by the President acting under the twenty-fifth amendment to the Constitution, all evidence and information obtained pursuant to an authorized investigation under this Act relating to such candidate shall be forwarded to the appropriate committees of the Congress.

Provides that the disclosure, release, or retention (after confirmation of the subject) of evidence or information in violation of the provisions of this Act shall be punishable by a fine not to exceed $50,000, imprisonment not to exceed five years, or both.
