A bill to repeal the act terminating Federal supervision over the property and members of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin as a federally recognized, sovereign Indian Tribe; and to restore to the Menominee Tribe of Wisconsin those Federal services furnished to American Indians because of their status as American Indians, and for other purposes.
Menominee Restoration Act - Provides for the repeal of the Act of June 17, 1954 which terminated Federal supervision of the Menominee Tribe.
Provides that within fifteen days after the date of enactment of this Act the Secretary shall announce the date of a general council meeting of the tribe to elect the Menominee Restoration Committee. States that the Menominee Restoration Committee shall represent the Menominee people in the implementation of this Act and shall have no powers other than those given to it in accordance with this Act.
Authorizes the Menominee Restoration Committee, under contract with the Secretary, to proceed to make current the membership role of the Menominee Tribe in accordance with the terms of this Act.
Requires the Menominee Restoration Committee to conduct elections by secret ballot for the purposes of determining the tribe's constitution and bylaws and the individuals who shall serve as members of the tribe's governing body.
States that subject to the approval of the shareholders as required by the laws of the State of Wisconsin, the board of Directors of Menominee Enterprises Incorporated shall transfer to the Secretary all assets held by such corporation. Provides that such assets shall be held in trust by the Secretary, on behalf of the United States for the tribe.
Authorizes the Secretary to make such rules and regulations as are necessary to carry out the provisions of this Act. Authorizes to be appropriated such sums as may be necessary to carry out the provisions of this Act.
