To amend section 30113 of title 49, United States Code, to increase the annual number of vehicles that may be exempted for the development of new vehicle safety features, and for other purposes.
Practical Automated Vehicle Exemptions Act or the PAVE Act
This bill increases the annual number of vehicles that may be exempted from federal motor vehicle safety standards for the development of new vehicle safety features.
It makes a manufacturer eligible for an exemption from certain standards relating to a bumper standard if the Department of Transportation (DOT) determines that the manufacturer's total motor vehicle production in the most recent year of production is not more than 10,000.
A manufacturer is eligible for an exemption from other standards if DOT determines that the exemption is for not more than a specified number of vehicles in any 12-month period.
The bill puts a cap on renewals of exemptions.
