A BILL
To amend the National Maritime Heritage Act of 1994 to reaffirm and
revise the designation of America's National Maritime Museum, and for
other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. REAFFIRMATION AND REVISION OF DESIGNATION OF AMERICA'S
NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM UNDER THE NATIONAL MARITIME
HERITAGE ACT OF 1994.
(a) Amendment of 1994 Act.--The National Maritime Heritage Act of
1994 (16 U.S.C. 5401 et seq.) is amended by inserting after section 9
the following new section.
``SEC. 9A. DESIGNATION OF AMERICA'S NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM.
``(a) In General.--America's National Maritime Museum is comprised
of those museums designated by law to be museums of America's National
Maritime Museum on the basis that they--
``(1) house a collection of maritime artifacts clearly
representing the Nation's maritime heritage; and
``(2) provide outreach programs to educate the public about
the Nation's maritime heritage.
``(b) Initial Designation of Museums.--The following museums
(meeting the criteria specified in subsection (a)) are designated as
museums of America's National Maritime Museum:
``(1) The Mariners' Museum, located at 100 Museum Drive,
Newport News, Virginia.
``(2) The South Street Seaport Museum, located at 207 Front
Street, New York, New York.
``(3) The Maine Maritime Museum, located at 243 Washington
Street, Bath, Maine.
``(4) The Penobscot Marine Museum, located at 5 Church
Street, Searsport, Maine.
``(5) The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Museum,
located at 265 Massachusetts, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
``(6) The New Bedford Whaling Museum, located at 18 Johnny
Cake Hill, New Bedford, Massachusetts.
``(7) The Peabody Essex Museum, located at East India
Square, Salem, Massachusetts.
``(8) The USS Constitution Museum, located at Building 22
in Boston Harbor, Boston, Massachusetts.
``(9) The Connecticut River Museum, located at 67 Main
Street, Essex, Connecticut.
``(10) The Mystic Seaport Museum, located in Mystic,
Connecticut.
``(11) The Independence Seaport Museum, located at 211
South Columbus Boulevard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
``(12) The San Francisco Maritime Historic Park, located at
National Park Service Building E, Room 265, Lower Fort Mason,
San Francisco, California.
``(13) The Navy Museum, located at Washington Navy Yard,
Washington District of Columbia.
``(14) The Calvert Marine Museum, located in Solomons,
Maryland.
``(15) The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, located in Saint
Michaels, Maryland.
``(16) The Adirondack Museum, located in Blue Mountain
Lake, New York.
``(17) The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, located in
Cold Spring Harbor, New York.
``(18) The Erie Canal Museum, located at 318 Erie Boulevard
East, Syracuse, New York.
``(19) The North Carolina Maritime Museum, located at 315
Front Street, Beaufort, North Carolina.
``(20) The Columbia River Maritime Museum, located at 1792
Marine Drive, Astoria, Oregon.
``(21) The Wisconsin Maritime Museum, located at 75
Maritime Drive, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
``(c) Future Designation of Other Museums Not Precluded.--The
designation of the museums referred to in subsection (b) as museums of
America's National Maritime Museum does not preclude the designation by
law of any other museum that meets the criteria specified in subsection
(a) as a museum of America's National Maritime Museum.
``(d) Reference to Museums.--Any reference in any law, map,
regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to a
museum designated by law to be a museum of America's National Maritime
Museum shall be deemed to be a reference to that museum as a museum of
America's National Maritime Museum.''.
SEC. 2. REPEAL OF SUPERSEDED LAW.
Section 1068 of the Strom Thurmond National Defense Authorization
Act for Fiscal Year 1999 (Public Law 105-261; 112 Stat. 2135; 16 U.S.C.
5409) is repealed.
