following concurrent resolution; which was referred to the Committee on
Education and the Workforce

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To honor the ExploraVision Awards Program and to encourage more
students to participate in this innovative national student science
competition.
Whereas the Congress recognizes that the future of our Nation relies heavily on
continued scientific discovery and technological innovation;
Whereas the Congress further recognizes that our Nation's success in the coming
years will depend on quality science education that develops the ability
of students to understand and apply the principles of science;
Whereas the ExploraVision Awards Program, sponsored by Toshiba and administered
by the National Science Teachers Association, was launched in 1992 to
energize students with a desire to learn and to increase their interest
in the world of science;
Whereas the ExploraVision Awards Program asks students, working in teams of 3 or
4 with a teacher-advisor, to use their imagination to envision a form of
technology 20 years from now, and to compete by sharing their vision
through written descriptions and story boards;
Whereas the ExploraVision Awards Program, in recognizing the fact that most of
today's scientific discoveries and technological innovation are achieved
through teamwork, encourages students to develop their ability to work
together as a team to explore innovative scientific and technological
visions of the future;
Whereas the ExploraVision Awards Program exemplifies the principles espoused in
the National Science Education Standards, including cooperative
learning, teacher as facilitator, and performance-based assessment;
Whereas the ExploraVision Awards Program cuts across all science disciplines and
relates the disciplines of language, arts, mathematics, and art to
science;
Whereas the ExploraVision Awards Program has grown to become the largest K-12
student science competition in the world since its launch in 1992; and
Whereas the Congress supports efforts to improve science education and
recognizes that it is critical that the United States, through programs
like the ExploraVision Awards Program, takes a lead role in encouraging
students to develop the kind of scientific and technological thinking
our society needs in order to meet the challenges of the future: Now,
therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),
That the Congress--
(1) honors the ExploraVision Awards Program as an
innovative national student science competition for its
outstanding contribution to science education, and for
providing students the opportunity to learn the excitement of
scientific achievement, the value of teamwork, the joy of
creativity, and a spirit of accomplishment;
(2) encourages K-12 students across the country to
participate in this innovative student science competition;
(3) commends the National Science Teachers Association and
Toshiba for their dedication to the success of the program and
to encouraging students to pursue careers in science;
(4) authorizes and requests the President to issue a
proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to
support the goals of the ExploraVision Awards Program, with
appropriate ceremonies and activities; and
(5) directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to
transmit copies of this resolution to--
(A) the President;
(B) the National Science and Technology Council;
(C) the President's Committee of Advisors on
Science and Technology; and
(D) the Governor of each of the several States, the
Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam,
American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern
Mariana Islands, and to the mayor of the District of
Columbia, with a request that the Governor or mayor
transmit copies of this resolution to each school
district in the Governor's or mayor's
jurisdiction.
