To authorize the Architect of the Capitol to establish a Capitol Visitor Center under the East Plaza of the United States Capitol, and for other purposes.
Jacob Joseph Chestnut-John Michael Gibson United States Capitol Visitor Center Act of 1998 - Authorizes the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) to: (1) plan, construct, equip, administer, and maintain a Capitol Visitor Center under the East Plaza of the Capitol; and (2) reconstruct the East Plaza and its environs to enhance its attractiveness, safety, and security.
Requires the AOC: (1) in developing plans and designs for carrying out the activities authorized under this Act to give due consideration to the Final Design Report of the AOC dated November 10, 1995, relating to construction of the Capitol Visitor Center; (2) to identify alternatives for construction of the Center that will reduce the costs of the Center's construction; and (3) to report to specified congressional committees on such plans and designs. Authorizes appropriations.
Designates the Capitol Visitor Center as the Jacob Joseph Chestnut-John Michael Gibson United States Visitor Center.
