A bill to provide that professional sports teams relocating to different communities shall lose trademark protection with respect to team names, and for other purposes.
Sports Heritage Act of 1996 - Prohibits a professional sports team that relocates to another community from enforcing any right, interest, or privilege under the Trademark Act of 1946 with respect to its identity used on the date one year before the relocation.
Exempts any team: (1) that is located and plays home games in a community for less than ten years immediately preceding the relocation; and (2) the relocation of which is approved in writing by the chief executive officer of the local government of the area in which the team's playing facility is located.
