following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Education and Labor
A BILL
To amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to permit the cancellation of
Perkins loans for service in law enforcement or corrections.
  Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United
  States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. POLICE RECRUITMENT EDUCATION PROGRAM.
  (a) AMENDMENT- Section 465(a)(2) of the Higher Education Act of 1965
  (20 U.S.C. 1087ee(a)(2)) is amended--
  (1) by striking `or' at the end of subparagraph (D);
  (2) by striking the period at the end of subparagraph (E) and inserting
  `; or'; an
  (3) by adding at the end the following new subparagraph:
  `(F) as a full-time law enforcement officer or corrections officer
  for service to local, State, or Federal law enforcement or corrections
  agencies.'.
  (b) CONFORMING AMENDMENT- Section 465(a)(3)(i) of such Act (20
  U.S.C. 1087ee(a)(3)(i)) is amended by striking `(A) or (C)' and inserting
  `(A), (C), or (F)'.
  (c) EFFECTIVE DATE- The amendments made by this section shall apply only
  to loans made on or after the date of enactment of this Act under part E
  of title IV of Higher Education Act of 1965.
