IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES May 25, 1989 Mr. ORTIZ introduced the following joint resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Post Office and Civil Service JOINT RESOLUTION Designating the Ghost Squadron of the Confederate Air Force as the `United States Ambassador for the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of World War II'. Whereas World War II began on September 1, 1939, when Germany attacked Poland and ended on September 2, 1945, when Japan surrendered; Whereas the 50th anniversary of World War II will begin on September 1, 1989, and end on September 2, 1995; Whereas World War II was an era during which the people of the United States and free people throughout the world came together as never before to challenge, do combat with, and defeat the enemies of freedom; Whereas World War II also marked the evolution of airpower as a significant factor in the defense of the United States and in the preservation of democracy, individual freedom, and free enterprise; Whereas the Ghost Squadron of the Confederate Air Force (hereafter in this joint resolution referred to as the `Ghost Squadron') is the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving, in flying condition, a complete collection of the combat aircrafts which were flown by each branch of the Armed Forces in World War II; Whereas the Ghost Squadron is the only museum in the world dedicated to providing museum buildings for the permanent protection and display of these aircrafts as a tribute to the thousands of men and women who built, serviced, and flew them; Whereas the Ghost Squadron is the only museum in the world dedicated to perpetuate in the memory and hearts of all of the people of the United States the spirit in which these aircrafts were flown for the defense of the United States; Whereas the Ghost Squadron is the only museum in the world dedicated to the establishment of an organization having the dedication, enthusiasm, and esprit de corps necessary to operate, maintain, and preserve these aircrafts as symbols of the military aviation heritage of the United States; Whereas the Ghost Squadron, as a result of its foresightedness and dedication, now maintains and operates the largest, most authentic, and most complete fleet of World War II military aircrafts; Whereas this fleet includes British, German, Russian, and Japanese aircrafts, as well as United States aircrafts; and Whereas the educational purposes and instructional capabilities of the Ghost Squadron coincide with the nationally significant lessons to be learned from World War II: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Ghost Squadron of the Confederate Air Force is designated as the `United States Ambassador for the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of World War II', and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon Federal and State departments and agencies (as well as chambers, bureaus, education groups, the media, and the people of the United States) to acknowledge such designation in planning and carrying out any World War II commemorative ceremony or activity.
