Condemns the excessive and indiscriminate use of force by the authorities of the People's Republic of China against its citizens.
Calls upon the Chinese authorities to: (1) cooperate with international efforts to assess the needs of, and provide medical and other humanitarian assistance to, the victims of the recent violence; and (2) resolve China's political crisis without further violence, end martial law, release all political prisoners, enter into a genuine dialogue with representatives of the demonstrators, permit the flow of information about the democracy movement, and embark on a program of political reform.
Supports the actions taken by the President: (1) in response to the Chinese authorities' repression; and (2) to protect U.S. citizens in China. Urges immediate consultations with other democratic nations to consider additional measures should the violence continue.
