A bill to amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act with respect to making more equitable the application of the area wage index for prospective payment of hospitals under the medicare program.
Medicare Wage Index Equity Act of 1988 - Amends title XVIII (Medicare) of the Social Security Act to require that in determining the proportion of hospital costs attributable to wages and wage-related costs the Secretary of Health and Human Services: (1) take into account the different mixes of occupations among different areas; and (2) in determining rural hospital costs, consider wage costs for skilled personnel on a statewide rather than strictly rural basis.
